In January 2014, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule commenced around Australia, allowing eligible children aged 2-17 to access dental care via private dental practitioners. The schedule provides basic dental services, including examinations, x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealants, fillings, root canals and extractions. The Schedule does not cover services like orthodontics (plates and braces) or cosmetic dental treatment. The benefit provides up to $1000 per child over two consecutive calendar years. The Schedule will allow many Australian children to visit a local private dental practice. For instance, they may not have to travel so far to receive dental care from a Public Dental facility. In addition, children may receive dental care more quickly, as many Public Dental Clinics have long waiting times.
Here in Geelong, we anticipate that many children will be eligible to receive dental treatment under the schedule. We welcome these children at our practice. Eligible families will be able to access treatment on a bulk billing basis. This means that there are no out-of-pocket expenses for treatment provided as part of the Schedule.
