Do you love fruit smoothies? You might want to go easy on them! A 2013 study suggests that fruit smoothies “can cause dental erosion if consumed irresponsibly”.
The reason for this is primarily the ingredients. Smoothies contain fresh fruit and are acidic. The minerals in the enamel start to dissolve in an acidic environment. Repeated or prolonged exposure can significantly erode the enamel. This can lead to increased tooth wear and sensitivity.
Researchers concluded, “In order to minimize the risk of developing dental erosion without removing the claimed nutritional benefits of their consumption, their consumption should be confined to mealtimes.”
So if you love fruit smoothies, it’s time to rethink the way you consume them.
