Soft drinks, energy drinks and fruit juices are very popular beverages, but most of these are very acidic compared to water and milk. The biggest problem with consuming acids is that they dissolve tooth enamel. The more acidic the beverages are and the more often they are consumed, the more likely you are to eventually develop irreversible damage to the teeth, known as tooth erosion. Once enamel has been lost it can never grow back.
This infographic shows how much sugar and acid is present in some of the most popular types of beverages. Is your favourite drink on the list?
Acidic drinks are fine if they are only consumed occasionally. Water is the best option the rest of the time. Please ask Dr Teo if you have any questions or concerns about the acidity of drinks or tooth erosion.
